Hoverfly on Dandelion I

A hoverfly rests atop the vibrant yellow florets of a common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). With its black-and-yellow striped abdomen and large reddish-brown eyes, this insect mimics the appearance of a bee—a form of protective mimicry used to deter predators. Though harmless and stingless, its resemblance to a bee helps it avoid being eaten while it feeds on nectar.
